In an era of disposable products, we yearn for emotive, heirloom quality furniture. This need not be overly indulgent. To do so, my solution encompasses the following.
1. High-quality thus extending the life-cycle to effectively eliminate waste. 2. Created with classic aesthetics to ensure it never goes out of style. 3. The product fills more than one niche and is easy to convert (desk, stool, chair, lounge) reducing the need for additional products. 4. Utilize plywood due to its proven strength, greenness, and value. Then surface the material with quality finishes. 5. Comfort is essential so that it will not be discarded when aged. 6. Easy ingress and egress for everyone. Correct height and width with arms for aid. 7. Designed for minor and existing tooling which saves countless resources. 8. Takes advantage of traditionally expensive processes that are now automated (box joints). 9. Nearly zero manufacturing waste of base material. 10. Stackable for warehousing, shipping and customer storage. 11. Embellish the most important details with the highest payoff (aluminum or nickel edging). 12. Stable and strong. My traditional father would enjoy sitting in this chair.
The real beauty is invisible to most. The perfectly scaled back, seat and ottoman. How the wood on both sides of the stool has the same edge angle or the opening becomes a foot rest. The simple pin lock that allows the transformations while maintaining a perfect sitting posture. Three identical pillows are protected as a table but cushion when stacked. Everyone will notice this is a livable chair when they use the flat arm rests to rest a coffee cup or book. This is not merely an artistic study. This design is an obsession that permeated every facet of my life.
